Our Story

A trading post for beans, stories & afternoons.

In 1987, Devraj Malviya came home to Sarnath after a decade of buying and selling green coffee across the ports of Kochi and Chennai. He rented a crumbling two-room house a short walk from the Dhamek Stupa, hauled in a cast-iron roaster, and hung a hand-painted sign: Coffee Trading Co.

Pilgrims, students from the nearby monasteries, and wandering scholars began lingering over his cups for hours. What started as a trader's counter slowly became Sarnath's living room — three generations later, still roasting on the same corner, still pouring for anyone who wanders in off the dusty lane.

The first roast

Devraj lights the cast-iron roaster in a two-room house near the stupa.

1996

The courtyard opens

A neem-shaded courtyard is added, and the café's famous filter kaapi is born.

2011

Second generation

Daughter Meera returns from culinary school and reimagines the kitchen.

2024

Meet the Chef

Grandfather's beans, Meera's imagination.

Meera grew up asleep on flour sacks behind the roaster, waking to the crackle of beans and the clatter of the courtyard. She trained in Lyon and cooked across Goa and Lisbon before the lane near the stupa pulled her home.

“My grandfather traded coffee in sacks. I trade it in moments — a cup, a plate, an afternoon you don't want to end.”

Her kitchen marries the spices of the Ganges plains with the technique she gathered abroad: rose in the sponge, chaat masala on the toast, tender coconut over the cold brew. Everything bright, everything playful, everything rooted in Sarnath.
